Being shortlisted across three distinct categories is a significant achievement for EPAS and reflects the multidisciplinary engineering behind GreaseShield® bringing together environmental, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and digital engineering to address the challenge of fats, oils and grease (FOG) in commercial wastewater.
Engineering Innovation in Grease Management
FOG remains a major challenge for commercial kitchens and wastewater networks, contributing to drainage blockages, pollution, maintenance costs and operational disruption.
GreaseShield® was developed to move grease management beyond conventional passive separation. The technology combines a patented separation process with automatic grease recovery, reverse-flow hydraulics, grey-water recirculation and magnetic baffle technology.
EPAS has also continued to develop the intelligence behind the technology through the EPAS Programmable Logic Controller (EPLC), AI-assisted site surveys, predictive maintenance and digital monitoring. These developments help improve system performance while allowing potential operational issues to be identified earlier.
This approach has helped transform grease management from passive containment into a more intelligent system focused on pollution prevention, operational efficiency and resource recovery.
Sustainability Designed into the Product
GreaseShield® has also been shortlisted for the Sustainability Award, recognising an engineering approach in which environmental performance is considered throughout the product lifecycle.
The technology is designed to capture FOG before it enters drainage infrastructure and recover it as a resource suitable for conversion into biodiesel feedstock. It operates without chemical additives and uses waste thermal energy naturally available within commercial kitchens rather than relying on additional electrical heating systems.
According to EPAS’s award submission, a GreaseShield® installation can recover approximately 2,100 litres of FOG annually, producing around 1,953 litres of biodiesel feedstock. Biodiesel produced from recovered grease can achieve lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions up to 87% lower than conventional diesel.
GreaseShield® is also supported by independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Global GreenTag Platinum Health certification and EPAS’s ISO 14068-1 Carbon Neutrality certification, providing independent evidence behind its environmental credentials.
Manufacturing Engineering for Global Deployment
The Manufacturing Engineering Project of the Year shortlist recognises another important part of the GreaseShield® story: turning an innovative environmental technology into a product that can be manufactured consistently, efficiently and at international scale.
EPAS embedded Design for Manufacture (DfM), concurrent engineering and modular product architecture into the development process. Manufacturing engineers, product designers, production specialists and service engineers worked together to consider production, assembly, serviceability, quality and future product development from the design stage.
The modular approach simplifies assembly and component replacement while allowing individual elements to be improved without requiring a fundamental redesign of the manufacturing platform.
This manufacturing strategy has supported the international deployment of GreaseShield® across 32 countries, while maintaining consistent engineering standards and enabling continued product development.
Continuing to Invest in Engineering Excellence
Behind these achievements is EPAS’s continued commitment to research and development.
Approximately 6% of annual turnover is reinvested in R&D, supporting work in areas including sensing technologies, artificial intelligence, predictive maintenance and other developments designed to improve GreaseShield® performance and respond to emerging environmental challenges.
GreaseShield® is now exported to 32 countries, and EPAS has received 26 international awards recognising innovation, sustainability, product development and engineering excellence.
