EPAS is delighted to announce that we have been shortlisted as a finalist in the Climate Adaptation & Resilience category at the All-Ireland Sustainability Awards 2026.
With a record 178 entries submitted to this year’s awards, reaching the final stage is a fantastic recognition of the work being undertaken by the EPAS team to develop more resilient and sustainable wastewater infrastructure.
Designing Climate Resilience into Wastewater Infrastructure
Climate change is placing increasing pressure on commercial wastewater systems through extreme weather, ageing drainage networks, growing urbanisation and increasing demands on essential building services.
At EPAS, we believe climate adaptation should be designed into infrastructure rather than delivered as a response to failure.
Our shortlisted initiative centres on the continued development of GreaseShield® and FilterShield™ as integrated wastewater resilience solutions, designed to prevent pollution at source, improve drainage reliability, recover valuable resources and strengthen the long-term performance of wastewater infrastructure.
Preventing Problems at Source
Rather than waiting for blockages, pollution incidents or drainage failures to occur, EPAS takes a preventative engineering approach.
FilterShield™ intercepts food waste, coffee grounds, starch and other solids before they enter the drainage network. It operates passively, without electricity, disposable filters or consumables, helping improve wastewater quality while reducing maintenance requirements and the likelihood of blockages.
GreaseShield® complements this by automatically separating fats, oils and grease (FOG), using recovered waste thermal energy generated during normal kitchen operations. Captured FOG can then be diverted for biodiesel production rather than becoming a pollutant within downstream wastewater infrastructure.
Together, these technologies demonstrate how smarter wastewater management can help businesses protect essential infrastructure while supporting climate adaptation and resource recovery.
Measurable Environmental Impact
The environmental benefits are measurable.
According to our award submission, each GreaseShield® unit recovers approximately 2,100 litres of FOG annually, generating around 1,953 litres of biodiesel feedstock. Biodiesel produced from this recovered material can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 87% compared with conventional diesel.
EPAS has also completed independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) across the GreaseShield® and FilterShield™ ranges and achieved ISO 14068-1 Carbon Neutrality, providing transparent lifecycle information to support sustainable procurement and evidence-based infrastructure planning.
Building Resilience for the Future
Our work does not stop with today’s technology.
EPAS continues to invest approximately 6% of annual turnover in research and development, with current initiatives including AI-assisted site surveys, predictive maintenance, IoT-enabled monitoring, dissolved oxygen solutions, food waste recovery solutions and carbon capture research.
These developments are focused on identifying operational risks earlier, improving performance and ensuring wastewater infrastructure can continue adapting as environmental pressures evolve.
Celebrating Sustainability Across Ireland
The All-Ireland Sustainability Awards 2026 received a record 178 entries, with organisations from across Ireland recognised for their work in sustainability, innovation and resilience.
The winners will be announced on Thursday, 1 October 2026 at the Europa Hotel, Belfast, as part of the Festival of Sustainable Impact.
Being named a finalist in the Climate Adaptation & Resilience Award is a proud achievement for the entire EPAS team and recognition of our commitment to developing infrastructure that can meet both today’s needs and tomorrow’s environmental challenges.
