GreaseShield® Featured on ITV’s Sewermen: Tackling Fatbergs and Keeping UK Sewers Flowing

We’re excited to share that GreaseShield® appeared in Episode 1 of ITV’s Sewermen, a docuseries highlighting the heroes maintaining the UK’s water systems. This episode discusses the fatberg issue and how GreaseShield® helps combat these sewer-clogging monsters.

The Fatberg Crisis Explained

As highlighted in Sewermen, fatbergs form in the sewer when fat, oil, and grease (FOG) mix with non-biodegradable items like wet wipes. When businesses pour FOG down the drain, it cools, solidifies, and binds with other materials, creating blockages that can block entire sewer lines. These fatbergs cost millions to remove and can lead to environmental hazards like sewage overflows.

In the words of Grant Mitchell, Head of Fat, Oil, and Grease at Severn Trent, “If the business doesn’t use a fat trap, ultimately their fat is going to go into the sewer. What tends to happen is that fat goes into the sewer and, when it cools down, it solidifies and mixes with the wet wipes and all the things that shouldn’t go down there, including sewage itself. It basically creates a fatberg.”

GreaseShield®’s Role in the FOG Program

GreaseShield® has been at the forefront of the FOG (Fat, Oil, and Grease) Program, led by Severn Trent. This initiative aims to reduce fatbergs in the UK’s sewer systems by encouraging businesses to adopt grease management systems. One of the first GreaseShield® units was installed at Pascal at The Old Vicarage in Burton on Trent.

Our GreaseShield® technology offers a cutting-edge solution to help prevent FOG from entering the sewers in the first place. GreaseShield® captures and separates fats, oils, and grease before they reach the sewer system, ensuring efficient kitchen operations and reducing the risk of sewer blockages.

Why GreaseShield® is Essential for Businesses

For restaurants, cafés, and foodservice businesses, proper FOG disposal is vital for protecting local water systems. Installing a GreaseShield® unit helps businesses comply with environmental standards, avoid costly fines, and reduce their contribution to fatbergs.

Key benefits of using GreaseShield®:

  • Effective FOG Removal: Captures FOG before it enters the sewer system, preventing blockages and fatbergs.
  • Environmental Compliance: Ensures businesses meet regulatory requirements for FOG management.
  • Cost Savings: Reduces the risk of plumbing issues, costly repairs, and fines associated with improper FOG disposal.
